How Do We Stop Anger Before It Takes Over Our Speech?

Why do we say the words we regret later precisely when we are angry?

The canonical unit focuses on the small interval between anger and speech. In that interval, the ego can demand an immediate answer, a sharp sentence or a verbal victory. Once spoken, however, words remain in the relationship after the emotional peak has passed. The essay applies this to family conflict, education and moments of insult. Its psychological explanation of ego and anger is interpretive rather than settled science. The practical discipline is simple to state and difficult to practice: create a delay before the mouth becomes the servant of the emotion. The goal is not to deny anger, but to prevent a temporary state from choosing permanent words that will later require repair.
