When Does Guilt Awaken Repentance, and When Does It Become a Habit That Numbs Us?

The canonical unit distinguishes moral guilt from a pattern in which repeated wrongdoing gradually dulls sensitivity. Its source uses the language of depression, but the review gate requires clear separation between guilt and clinical depression and prohibits diagnostic use. The spiritual question is how an uncomfortable moral signal functions. At first, guilt can interrupt behavior and call a person back to responsibility. If the same behavior is repeated without response, the discomfort itself can become familiar and lose its power. The goal is neither endless self-condemnation nor emotional numbness. Healthy repentance listens to the signal, names the wrong, takes a concrete corrective step and then moves toward repair rather than making guilt into a permanent identity.
