Why does the Torah use several different expressions when describing the counting?
The canonical unit links counting with naming and turns that language into a question of identity. A person can be counted as one more number and still remain a distinct name, with abilities, choices and a story that no one else can write. The essay addresses the pain of low self-worth without making self-importance the goal. Meaning grows when a person stops asking only how he compares with others and begins asking what his own life is becoming. Potential is not a demand to be spectacular. It is an invitation to make one’s particular gifts, responsibilities and decisions form a coherent story rather than allowing life to pass without direction.
