Can Love and Authority Exist Together?

“Our Father, our King” places two needs beside each other: closeness and boundary, love and authority. We often split them. We imagine that love means never disappointing, never demanding, never saying no; or that authority must rely on fear, distance, or humiliation. A healthier model refuses both extremes. Love does not cancel standards, and standards do not require emotional coldness. In parenting, leadership, marriage, and self-discipline, the question is how to hold a relationship firmly enough to give it structure and warmly enough that responsibility does not become rejection.
