Why Must the Shofar Sound Be Both Broken and Whole?
Some losses do not disappear, and some crises change us permanently. The image of broken and whole sounds refuses the fantasy that renewal means returning to the exact person we were before the fracture. A new wholeness may include the knowledge of what broke. It can carry grief, weakness, memory, and still become a life with direction. The spiritual question is not always “How do I erase the break?” Sometimes it is “How do I build a life in which the break is real, but no longer the only thing that is real?”
