If Yom Kippur Brings Atonement, Why Do We Still Need Purification?
Forgiveness answers one question: what is the status of the wrong? Purification asks another: what remains inside the person after the wrong has been faced? Someone may be forgiven and still carry habits, shame, defensiveness, or a self-story organized around the failure. Yom Kippur distinguishes legal or spiritual release from the slower work of becoming different. Atonement can open the door; purification is walking through it. The goal is not endless self-suspicion but a life in which the forgiven past no longer dictates present reactions.
