Why Say “I Was Wrong” If God Already Knows I Regret It?

Feeling bad and taking responsibility are not identical. Regret can remain vague, private, and protected by explanations. Confession forces the person to name what happened without hiding behind a story about why it was understandable. The same is true in human relationships: “I am sorry you were hurt” is different from “I did this, it hurt you, and I was wrong.” Words do not complete repair by themselves, but they can mark the moment when excuses stop organizing the story. Genuine apology then has to continue into restitution, changed behavior, and respect for the other person’s boundaries.
